East Spencer, NC

East Spencer is a Rowan County town just south of Spencer, with the Southern Railway tracks still separating the two communities. The 2020 census counted 1,567 residents. Town hall, police, parks, neighborhood groups, and nearby Rowan-Salisbury schools handle much of the daily work, while Salisbury is close enough for groceries, healthcare, and larger errands. Royal Giants Park and the old school-and-church corridors give the town a local center even as residents move through the larger Piedmont network around I-85.

East Spencer incorporated in 1901 as the railway reshaped the area around Southern Railway's Spencer Shops. The town was first known as Southern City, a name that stuck because the railroad mattered so much to local life. The East Spencer Negro School opened in 1900 and later became Dunbar High School; the Dunbar Center keeps that educational history in the community. The shops across the tracks eventually became the North Carolina Transportation Museum, but East Spencer remains a lived-in town of homes, churches, parks, public work, and the rail corridor that first put it on the map.
