About Edgerton
Edgerton is a Platte County community within the Kansas City metropolitan area, on a hilltop overlooking the Platte River. Local place-name records also identify it as Edgerton Junction. The river passes about half a mile east, while nearby roads connect the community with the incorporated city of Edgerton, three miles to the northeast at Missouri Routes B and Z. The hilltop setting separates homes and farm roads from the river bottom, and the larger Kansas City road network is close by.
The name Edgerton Junction belongs to the community’s railroad history. A post office using that name opened in 1899 and continued until 1916, reflecting the junction of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway near Edgerton. The incorporated city nearby grew around a different railroad-centered town plan, with the Rock Island line and a Kansas City–St. Joseph interurban later crossing its streets. Edgerton is a Missouri place where the Platte River, a hilltop settlement, and two layers of railroad geography share one local map.
