About El Mirage

El Mirage's modern story begins on the west bank of the Agua Fria River, where migrant farmworkers settled in the early 1930s to build canals and harvest crops. The community was founded in 1937 and incorporated in 1951, when agriculture still shaped the surrounding northwest Phoenix valley. It has since become a 9.90-square-mile city: the 2020 census counted 35,805 residents, and the July 2024 estimate was 36,468. The Agua Fria remains the city's eastern geographic edge, while Grand Avenue/U.S. 60 crosses northern El Mirage. Today, community activity is organized around a set of city and county partnerships. Gateway Park combines an amphitheater, splash pad, shaded playgrounds, lighted sports fields, and a skate plaza; citywide, El Mirage maintains more than 52 acres of parks and recreation land. The Northwest Valley Family YMCA, opened in 2014 through a partnership with the city, includes a basketball gym, seasonal family and lap pool, fitness center, children's club, teen and esports space, deck-hockey rink, field access, and a walking track.

As of July 2026, El Mirage residents received separate membership pricing under the city partnership. The El Mirage Library moved in July 2022 into a renovated former fire station at El Mirage and Thunderbird roads. Its 5,754 square feet contain computers, study rooms, Wi-Fi, a seed library, loanable telescopes, and virtual-meeting computers; the city also identifies a Spanish-language collection. Smaller civic programs fill additional roles: residents can rent plots in the community garden, and the Senior Center serves adults 55 and older and people with disabilities. El Mirage marked the 75th anniversary of its incorporation in 2026.
