El Nido, CA

El Nido is a Merced County farming community about 11 miles south of Merced along California State Route 59, at roughly 141 feet above sea level. Its name means "the nest" in Spanish and is tied to Rancho Chowchilla. The settlement took shape in the early 20th century when irrigation made more intensive farming possible. The local timeline follows the water system: an irrigation district formed in 1928, irrigation water arrived in 1932, and a cotton gin was operating by 1937.

School and irrigation still give the place its clearest present-day map. El Nido School District dates to 1914, with a school building completed in 1915, and El Nido Elementary remains a named local institution.
