El Portal, CA

El Portal sits five miles west-southwest of Yosemite Village at the western edge of Yosemite National Park, where Highway 140 follows the Merced River into the Sierra. The town began as a company place shaped by mining, logging, the Yosemite Valley Railroad, and tourism. Its first post office opened in 1907, and the four-story Hotel Del Portal soon welcomed rail travelers who spent the night before continuing by stage or automobile into Yosemite Valley.

The old railroad story still lingers in the village's buildings and road alignments, while the Merced remains the strongest natural reference. The National Park Service preserves the Old El Portal Schoolhouse, a reminder of the families and workers who lived outside the park entrance. Today, El Portal serves as a gateway community for park employees, residents, travelers, and businesses along the river corridor. The scale is tiny, but the traffic is international in spirit: people arrive for Yosemite, pass through a former railroad settlement, and leave with the Sierra already closing around the road.
