Elgin, KS

Elgin sits on the Kansas-Oklahoma line with a history built around cattle and the Santa Fe. Established in 1869, it became a stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe and was once described as one of the world's busiest cattle-shipping towns. The city page places it eight miles west of Chautauqua and six miles northwest of Boulanger, Oklahoma, so the state line remains part of its orientation. The cattle route gave surrounding ranches a market connection and tied Elgin to a wider livestock economy that reached beyond the county line.
