Elk Grove, CA

Back in the 1850s, Elk Grove started out as a simple Gold Rush stagecoach stop along the trail south of Sacramento. For decades, it remained a quiet farming community surrounded by open fields, ranches, and vineyards. As Sacramento grew after World War II, families looking for more space and newer homes began moving south into the area. In 2000, residents voted to officially incorporate Elk Grove as a full-fledged city, bringing together older historic neighborhoods with fast-growing suburban areas like Laguna and the more rural Sheldon. Today, it has grown from a sleepy crossroads into one of the most popular, family-friendly suburbs in the greater Sacramento valley.

You can feel that blend of past and present in the different parts of town. Old Town along Elk Grove Boulevard gives you historic brick buildings, local diners, and community street fairs. Head west into Laguna and you will find established master-planned subdivisions, quiet cul-de-sacs, and convenient strip malls. If you want more elbow room, the Sheldon area to the northeast features ranch-style properties, horse pastures, and a distinctly country vibe. Further south, newer master-planned developments continue to pop up with modern builds and freshly landscaped parks. Each corner of town has its own personality, so newcomers can choose between walkable suburban pockets, modern subdivisions, or a slice of country living.

A lot of people move here for the easy commute, but Elk Grove has plenty of local jobs too. Major healthcare providers like Kaiser Permanente and Sutter Health, along with the Elk Grove Unified School District and local city services, are some of the biggest employers around town. If you work in downtown Sacramento or at the UC Davis Medical Center, the drive up Highway 99 or Interstate 5 is straightforward outside of peak rush hour. Commuter buses run directly from local park-and-ride lots into downtown, and you can catch the Sacramento light rail Blue Line just across the northern border at Cosumnes River College.

Outdoor space is a huge part of everyday life in Elk Grove, with more than one hundred neighborhood parks and miles of paved walking trails along the Laguna Creek Greenbelt. The main hub for weekend fun is District56, a modern civic center featuring a competitive aquatics complex, walking paths, public art, and open green space for concerts and food truck festivals. Over in Old Town, the plaza hosts regular farmers markets and holiday celebrations. You might even spot an unexpected nod to the city's farming roots in the spring and summer, when herds of grazing sheep and goats are brought in to clear tall grass along the drainage canals and open fields, giving the suburban scenery a charming, rustic touch.
