Elkhorn, WI

Elkhorn is affectionately known as "The Christmas Card Town," a nickname that began in the 1950s when local artists captured its snowy streets for national holiday calendars. That picture-postcard atmosphere still centers on the historic downtown square. Serving as the Walworth County seat, the area stays active during the week with county offices, local diners, and independent shops. When winter arrives, the square turns into a festive gathering spot complete with carriage rides, youth choirs, and the annual Christmas Card Town Parade.

Another major hub of activity is the Walworth County Fairgrounds on the edge of town. Elkhorn hosts one of the oldest and largest county fairs in Wisconsin, bringing the entire community together every Labor Day weekend for grandstand entertainment, carnival rides, and livestock shows. Outside of fair week, the 100-acre grounds host everything from flea markets to equestrian competitions. The town even has fun with its weirder local folklore, hosting community gatherings at Sunset Park tied to the famous Beast of Bray Road legend.

Commuters and working professionals benefit from quick connections along Interstate 43 and Highway 67, putting Milwaukee, Beloit, and Lake Geneva within an easy drive. Locally, expanding business parks and the Gateway Technical College campus offer solid employment and training opportunities in healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and skilled trades. Neighborhoods offer a comfortable mix of classic older houses near the town center and newer subdivisions with spacious yards toward the outskirts. Combined with good parks and a welcoming atmosphere, Elkhorn gives newcomers a grounded, small-town lifestyle with plenty of practical conveniences.
