About Ellinwood

Ellinwood is a Barton County city just north of the Arkansas River and along the Santa Fe Trail. The first claim was staked in 1872, the same year the railroad arrived, and the city took its name from Santa Fe engineer Colonel John Ellinwood. Its downtown still carries the town’s German and Austrian heritage through brick buildings and carefully maintained brick streets, while the Underground City preserves shops and passageways beneath Main Street. The nearby Big Bend of the Arkansas was a water-and-fuel stop on the trail. Ellinwood is a railroad town with a frontier route above ground and a second town below it.
