About Elmer

Elmer is a Jackson County town on U.S. 283, fourteen miles south of Altus. W. T. Thaggard and J. H. Barr founded it in 1901, and its 1902 post office was named for Elmer W. Slocum, an official of the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway. The railroad reached town in 1908, supporting cotton gins, banks, a blacksmith shop, lumberyards, and early newspapers amid an agricultural economy. Elmer incorporated in 1925; the April 2020 census counted 64 residents, and the town remains tied to nearby Altus through the highway and regional work.
