About Elmo
Elmo is a Kaufman County community that grew around the Texas & Pacific Railway in the early 1870s. Residents named it for Elmo Scott, the railroad surveyor who routed the line through the county, and a post office followed in 1873. Within a decade the rail stop had mills, churches, schools, and a cotton-, corn-, and wheat-shipping trade. The town later shrank as rail-era business thinned. Elmo is a North Texas place whose name came from the railroad and whose first life ran on what the trains could carry.
