Elmore City, OK

Elmore City sits at the meeting of State Highways 74 and 29 in southwestern Garvin County, where a crossroads, farm country, and the old oil economy overlap. The settlement began around Rock Creek; Jasper N. Black opened a general store, a post office named for merchant J. O. Elmore arrived in 1890, and the town incorporated in 1898. A postal mix-up with Elmer changed the name to Banner in 1910, but residents restored Elmore City the following year. Even the county-seat campaign had local drama: in 1908, floodwaters kept voters from reaching the polls.

Oil development in the 1920s made Elmore City a supplier for surrounding petroleum fields, while agriculture remained the base underneath. The town's high-school students later drew national attention after a 1979-80 campaign to hold a prom with dancing, an episode loosely associated with Footloose. Today the place still reads as an inland crossroads: Highways 74 and 29 at the center, farm and ranch land around them, and a town name that survived two changes because residents wanted the original back.
