Emerson, GA

Emerson sits in southern Bartow County where US 41/GA 3, GA 293, and I-75 meet, giving the small city a direct connection to the Lake Allatoona and northwest Atlanta region. It is also the gateway town for Red Top Mountain State Park, a 1,553-acre park on the lake. The park’s name comes from the iron-rich red soil on Red Top Mountain, and its shoreline setting gives Emerson a geographic hook beyond its 2020 population of 1,415.

History is close to the surface here. Emerson was known as Stegall’s Station before its 1889 incorporation and was named for Joseph Emerson Brown, Georgia’s governor from 1857 to 1865 and later a U.S. senator. The site was tied to Bartow Iron Works, and during the Civil War Gen. Joseph E. Johnston’s forces camped here after retreating from Cassville; the Battle of Allatoona took place about two miles east. Emerson’s three-school listing and its highway connections make it a local center, while Red Top Mountain and the lake bring the surrounding landscape into the town’s everyday frame.
