Emerson, NE

Emerson is a Dakota, Dixon, and Thurston County village of 840 residents in the 2020 census, the only Nebraska community spread across three counties. It began as a railroad project in 1881, when the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway laid out the town at a junction and set aside land for a depot and section house. The first name, Kennesaw Junction, did not last; the village was renamed Emerson to avoid a duplicate name and honor Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Rail defined the town for decades. As many as 67 trains passed through in a day during the 1930s, and the depot and roundhouse still mark that era even though the trains no longer set the pace. Emerson incorporated in 1888 and later became home to the National Farm Crisis Organization. Main Street, local churches, farm roads, and the three-county boundary give the village a map bigger than its population. Emerson is a northeast Nebraska crossroads where railroad history, farm country, and an unusual county line meet.
