Emigrant, MT

Emigrant is a census-designated place in Park County, Montana, along the Yellowstone River about twenty miles south of Livingston and thirty miles north of Yellowstone National Park. The 2020 census counted 465 residents. The valley carries a layered travel history: Crow country and Indigenous routes, the Bozeman Trail, mining camps, stage stops, and a railroad line that turned Emigrant into a stop for nearby agriculture and mining. Emigrant Gulch and the old Yellowstone City and Chico area sit close by, giving the community a wider historical map.

Today the Yellowstone River is the local through line. Fly fishing, wildlife, ranch roads, and the mountains draw seasonal visitors, while Arrowhead Elementary and Park High School connect local children to the larger Livingston area. The valley’s river terraces and mountain foothills keep the landscape visible from every road. The place leans on tourism, but it also has year-round homes and services along the valley.
