Emigration Canyon is a Salt Lake County metro township stretching east from the Salt Lake Valley into the Wasatch Mountains. Emigration Canyon Road is the only arterial through the canyon, and the settlement breaks into distinct neighborhoods along steep slopes, creek bends, and side roads. The township covers about 19 square miles and crosses several ecological zones as the elevation changes. Emigration Canyon's history starts with the route used by pioneers entering the valley, then runs through sandstone hauling, the canyon railroad, and generations of residents using the corridor for homes and recreation. Residents voted to create the metro township in 2015, after earlier township arrangements, and the municipality was incorporated in 2017.
