Encampment, WY

Encampment sits in southern Carbon County between the Sierra Madre and Snowy Range, a high-country Wyoming town whose name reaches back to rendezvous held by trappers and traders in the 1830s. By the late nineteenth century, the valley had drawn tie cutters, ranchers, and copper prospectors. The Ferris-Haggarty mine turned Grand Encampment into a boomtown, and a 16-mile aerial tramway carried copper ore from the mountains to the smelter. The Saratoga & Encampment Railway arrived in 1908, but falling copper prices and smelter fires had already begun to break the boom.

The town’s present identity keeps those layers in view. The Grand Encampment Museum preserves mining, ranching, logging, and railroad artifacts, including tramway towers and ore buckets. The restored Grand Encampment Opera House, Carbon County School District No. 2, and the town’s annual Winter Carnival and Copper Days carry the community forward, while timber, ranching, and recreation remain part of the local economy. The 2020 census counted 452 residents. Encampment is a place where the mountains make the scale feel small, but the industrial ambition of the old copper district still hangs over the streets.
