Steamboat Springs, CO

Steamboat Springs’ city-owned ski hill predates its destination resort by nearly half a century. Norwegian ski jumper Carl Howelsen established organized winter recreation there in 1915, and Howelsen Hill is now Colorado’s oldest continuously operated ski area, with a natural ski-jumping complex that has trained one hundred Olympians. The larger Steamboat Resort opened in 1963 on Mount Werner; its current system covers 3,741 permitted acres with twenty-three lifts and more than 180 named trails. Skiing is only one layer of the city’s geography. Long before permanent Euro-American settlement, Yampatika Ute people used the valley’s mineral springs. The town took its name from a different spring whose chugging sound reminded early trappers of a steamboat, and the Yampa River still runs through its center.

The county seat had 13,224 residents in the 2020 census. Public facilities connect the resort economy with year-round local routines. Steamboat Springs maintains twenty-nine park sites totaling more than 1,000 acres, including six mineral springs, twenty-two athletic fields, playgrounds, skateparks, and river access. The paved Yampa River Core Trail threads from the south side through downtown to Bear River Park, reaching many of those spaces without using U.S. 40. Downtown’s nonprofit Old Town Hot Springs is built around Heart Spring, which feeds outdoor mineral pools; a 2025 renovation added an eight-lane lap pool, warm community pool, splash pool, and another hot pool to its fitness and aquatics complex.

Movement through town also changes with the seasons. Steamboat Springs Transit carries more than one million riders annually on its fare-free local buses. In the 2026 summer schedule, the Main Line linked west Steamboat, downtown, and the mountain every fifteen minutes during the day, with evening service as well. City recreation programs extend beyond visitors, offering after-school care, camps, adult leagues, senior trips, and river, mountain-bike, ski-ascent, and fat-bike race series.
