Erie, KS

Erie is a Neosho County courthouse town in the Neosho River valley, a little northeast of the river itself. The present settlement came together after two earlier communities, one near the river and another called Crawfordsville, agreed in 1866 to combine at this site. That compromise helps give the town its compact feel: county offices, Main Street businesses, and local institutions sit within a landscape shaped by river bottoms and farm roads. U.S. 59 links Erie with Parsons and Chanute, making the town part of a broader southeast Kansas circuit.

The calendar carries much of Erie’s character. In the third week of July, the Old Soldiers and Sailors Reunion brings back a tradition that has run since 1873, with music and a free bean feed at the center of the gathering. A car show, Christmas parade, county fair, River Run, rodeo, and other annual events fill out the year. Erie-Galesburg USD 101 serves Erie and nearby communities, and its green high school opened in 2010. The courthouse at 100 South Main keeps county business visible, while the reunion gives the town its most distinctive summer ritual.
