About Erie

Presque Isle shapes Erie as both coastline and transportation destination. The peninsula begins four miles west of downtown, creates the city's protected bay, and provides Pennsylvania's only surf swimming. Guarded beaches operate in season, while the park remains open throughout the year for fishing, boating, birding, and winter use. Its paved Karl Boyes trail makes a 13.5-mile circuit for cycling, running, and cross-country skiing, alongside 11 miles of hiking routes through dunes, ponds, marsh, and forest. In summer 2026, Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority Route 33 offered free Wednesday and Saturday trips from downtown to the environmental center and stops around the park. Ordinary fixed-route fare was $1.65, though the system did not run on Sundays. The bayfront and downtown contain a second set of gathering places: the convention center and amphitheater by the water, UPMC Park and Erie Insurance Arena farther inland, and the Erie Art Museum near Perry Square.

In June 2026, City Council approved a $14 million Market House planned south of the Bayfront Convention Center, with construction intended to create year-round space for local goods, food, entertainment, and occasional large farmers markets. That investment is occurring amid substantial economic strain and continued population loss. During 2020 through 2024, owner occupancy was 54.1 percent, the median value of owner-occupied homes was $115,200, and median gross rent was $870. Those prices sit beside a median household income of $46,113 and a poverty rate of 23.3 percent, so they should not be read as a simple bargain. The mean trip to work was 18.3 minutes. Erie's daily geography combines short urban trips and low recorded housing costs with persistent hardship, while the lake, park, cultural venues, and changing bayfront create public destinations across seasons.
