Espy, PA

Espy is a Columbia County census-designated place on the north side of the Susquehanna River, just across from Bloomsburg. Josiah Espy purchased the land in 1775, and the community grew along the river and canal route. In the 19th century, Espy had small boatbuilding operations; the Pennsylvania Canal Company established a larger boat-building and repair yard there in 1873, giving the place a surprising connection to the coal-carrying canal system. That yard put Espy inside a regional coal route before rail changed the equation. Railroads and flood damage eventually undercut that business, and the company ended its Susquehanna canal operations in 1901.

The present map is smaller in scale: U.S. 11 runs along the northern side, the river marks the southern side, and Bloomsburg is across the water. Espy sits within the Central Columbia school district and the Bloomsburg-Berwick regional orbit, but its distinctive local story is still the boatyard—an industrial chapter written before the canal gave way to rail.
