Water defines Essex on two sides: Middle River borders the community to the east, Back River to the west, and both open toward the Chesapeake Bay. The Baltimore County census-designated place had 40,505 residents in 2020, with development history dating to 1909. Its peninsula shifts from settled neighborhoods and the Eastern Boulevard commercial corridor to tidal shoreline and marsh. At the mouth of Middle River, Hart-Miller Island shows how much that shoreline has changed. A dike joined Hart and Miller islands in 1981, and dredged material from Baltimore Harbor and nearby tributaries filled the impoundment through 2009, creating the present 1,100-acre island. It is reachable only by personal boat or watercraft; the western shore has a 3,000-foot sandy beach, and the South Cell and primitive camping operate seasonally. Back River provides more immediate public access.

Cox's Point Park is a 25.9-acre waterfront site open from sunrise to sunset throughout the year, with a free boat ramp, fishing access, playgrounds, picnic areas, and reservable pavilions. On Eastern Boulevard, the Essex Branch of Baltimore County Public Library supplies public computers and Wi-Fi, two study rooms, a Spanish-language collection, meeting space, gaming, and a continuing schedule of programs and services. The library is also planning a 35,769-square-foot replacement on Old Eastern Avenue; its preliminary design followed community input, while bond funding remained part of the county's 2026 approval process. Essex Day began in 1975 as Super Sunday to raise support for restoring the Ballestone-Stansbury House. Its 51st edition was scheduled for September 2026, bringing local food vendors, makers, small businesses, and public-service groups together along the corridor.
