Estancia, NM

Estancia is Torrance County's seat in the Estancia Valley, an hour southeast of Albuquerque and surrounded by farm and ranch country. The county was created in 1903, and Estancia became its seat in 1905 after officials first took their oaths in a railroad passenger car at Progresso. That railroad and county-government combination put Estancia at the center of a broad high-desert region. Dryland farming, beans, ranching, and public offices have all shaped the town's working map.

Today the town's core includes the Torrance County offices, courthouse functions, schools, library, fairgrounds, and Arthur Park. The park's pond, shade trees, pavilion, playground, and courts sit near the Estancia Aquatic Center, giving residents a cluster of everyday gathering places. New Mexico Routes 41 and 55 connect the town through the valley, while the Salt Missions Scenic Byway brings a wider travel route through town. Estancia is a county-seat town with a strong agricultural backdrop: railroad beginnings, high-desert roads, county business, school events, and a park where the local week has somewhere to land.
