Ethridge, TN

Ethridge is a Lawrence County town at US 43 and Red Hill Road, north of Lawrenceburg and south of Mount Pleasant. The place began as a railroad stop called Hudson Springs in the 1880s, while the present town grew at the meeting of older cattle drovers' roads. When a later station was called Wayne Station, confusion with the earlier Ethridge stop led the railroad to use Ethridge for the current site. By 1914, lumber transloading had made the town a rail center with several mills, groceries, a hotel, and a post office.

Ethridge's current map is shaped by the Swartzentruber Amish settlement around it. Amish farm families, horse-and-buggy traffic, farm stands, handmade goods, and produce sales spread along the roads on both sides of Highway 43. Rick's Market, the Amish Museum, and two Amish Welcome Centers are recognizable stops, while the town's city hall, fire service, elementary school, and Alexandar Field/Park make up its civic layer. Ethridge is a place where a former lumber-and-rail town meets a living agricultural community, and the road shoulder can carry as much local information as the town center.
