Eureka, KS

Eureka is Greenwood County's seat, laid along the Fall River in south-central Kansas. The first settlement arrived in 1857 and the post office followed in 1858. The railroad later turned the town into a cattle, oil, and trading stop, with the Greenwood Hotel opening in 1883 and older Main Street buildings still carrying that commercial history. County government gives Eureka a larger role than its size alone would suggest, while the river keeps the town tied to the surrounding countryside.

The oddest chapter is Utopia College, a two-year certificate school Roger Babson founded in 1946 as an outpost for practical business instruction. It closed in 1970, yet the story gives Eureka an educational chapter far outside the usual county-seat script. Today, Eureka's local map still runs through the courthouse, Eureka USD 389, the Greenwood Hotel event center, the library, and a historic downtown where murals and preserved storefronts sit together. Eureka is a place where cattle-market history, a Fall River setting, county business, and one eccentric college story all share the same few blocks.
