Excel, AL

Excel is a town in southeastern Monroe County, Alabama, whose early story grew from homesteads, livestock, lumber, and farm shipping. Settlers arrived around 1875, and a post office was established in 1894. The name Excel referred to the area's productive agricultural land, giving the town a word that still carries its original local reasoning. A one-room school came early, followed by a larger school and the businesses needed to serve a growing rural community.

Railroad access changed the scale of Excel's trade. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad built a line through the area, while the Menistee and Repton Railroad added a spur and a depot. Lumber and farm products could then move outward, and the town gained stores, a bank, a garage, and other services. Excel had Monroe County's first accredited high school and vocational school by 1920, adding education to its civic role. The railroad stopped operating in 1935, growth slowed, and Excel incorporated in February 1948. Today the town's name still sits on a map shaped by farming, rail, school, and timber history.
