Free-roaming chickens are a visible part of Fair Oaks Village, gathering near businesses and turning up during outdoor events. The recreation and park district treats them as a link to the area's farm past. Its Fair Oaks Chicken Festival was scheduled for September 19, 2026, as the event's twenty-first annual edition. Village Park carries much of the summer calendar. Concerts use the amphitheater on the second and fourth Thursdays in June and July, and Shakespeare in the Park presented performances there in June 2026. Concerts and plays bring regular evening use to a commercial center where small businesses, park programming, the old clubhouse grounds, and an unofficial flock share the same few blocks.

Fair Oaks is an unincorporated Sacramento County community, so county land-use rules shape its neighborhoods and commercial areas. The Fair Oaks Village Special Planning Area, adopted in 1979 and amended in 2012, protects the center's historical and environmental character while allowing it to serve as a business district. A separate Village neighborhood preservation area describes an eclectic mix of house ages and styles along low-density streets with mature trees, narrow pavement, and relatively few curbs, gutters, sidewalks, or streetlights. Those standards apply only to a defined area near the Village. Larger commercial uses also line the Sunrise Boulevard area, creating a second shopping pattern beyond the older center. Sacramento County handles land-use questions; the Fair Oaks Recreation and Park District runs many local programs and facilities.

The pedestrian bridge at the edge of the Village records how agriculture and transportation shaped the community. Citrus growers north of the American River petitioned for the first Fair Oaks Bridge, completed in 1901, so wagons could reach a Southern Pacific rail spur on the opposite bank. A January 1907 flood destroyed that crossing, and a second flood swept away its temporary replacement in March. The existing steel bridge opened later in 1907. It carried vehicles until 1967 and reopened to walkers and cyclists in 1973. The change in use preserved the river crossing after road traffic moved elsewhere. It also gave Fair Oaks a direct connection to the American River Parkway. The truss bridge remains both a local landmark and a useful part of the trail network.

At Upper Sunrise Recreation Area, the bridge meets the Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail and a launch for small boats and rafts on the American River. The parkway continues along the river through riparian habitat, giving Fair Oaks a recreation corridor distinct from its inland commercial streets. The recreation district supplies another local layer through Village Park, Fair Oaks Park, a clubhouse, and a small black-box Performing Arts Center. Its 2026 calendar paired the established concert and chicken-festival series with an October Fair Oaks Folk Festival. The October festival was scheduled to use two outdoor stages across Village Park and the Veterans Memorial Amphitheatre. The clearest path through Fair Oaks starts with chickens and performances in the Village, crosses a steel bridge built for citrus wagons, and reaches the river trail and boat launch below.
