About Fairfield

Fairfield is Wayne County's seat in southern Illinois and home to Frontier Community College. The 2020 census counted 4,883 residents. The college and county offices give the city a role beyond its size: students, local government, and high-school athletics all feed into the same small-town center. The courthouse, campus, and athletic fields share that same local orbit. Fairfield's older story has a darker local chapter too; the Shelton Brothers Gang, bootleggers from the first half of the 20th century, made the town notorious in regional crime history.

Today, the town's calendar includes a community-wide yard sale, Veterans Day parade, and Christmas parade. The Wayne County Historical Society runs the Hanna House, Early History Museum, and Olive Branch Schoolhouse, with a cemetery walk in late summer or early fall. Frontier Community College fields baseball, softball, and volleyball, while Fairfield Community High School supplies another gathering point for local sports. Fairfield is a county-seat town where the courthouse role, community college, historic sites, and school teams keep the civic map active.
