Fairmount, GA

Fairmount sits in Gordon County along U.S. 411, in the foothills south of the Blue Ridge where Salacoa Creek and the Coosawattee River shape the surrounding map. Its road history reaches back to the Old Tennessee Road, a cattle-drive and stagecoach route; the place became a corporate town in 1897 and a city in 1927. A nineteenth-century tobacco chapter adds another layer: settlers known as the Little Virginia colony grew tobacco along Salacoa Creek and built factories and packing houses before the business faded.
