About Fairmount
Fairmount is a Grant County town settled in the 1830s by Quakers from North Carolina and laid out in 1850. Its name came from Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, and the town incorporated in 1870. Natural gas discovered nearby in 1887 pulled Fairmount into Indiana’s gas boom and helped feed a glass industry. Later, two hometown names—actor James Dean and Garfield creator Jim Davis—gave Fairmount a different kind of fame. Fairmount is an Indiana town with Quaker roots, a gas-era middle chapter, and two very recognizable sons.
