Fairton sits along the old crossroads of Fairfield Township in Cumberland County, where the Fairton-Millville Road once met the township's school and ferry routes. The township began as a much larger colonial district that included today's Fairfield, Lawrence, and Downe townships, and the Maurice River helped organize travel and trade.
