About Fairton

Fairton sits along the old crossroads of Fairfield Township in Cumberland County, where the Fairton-Millville Road once met the township's school and ferry routes. The township began as a much larger colonial district that included today's Fairfield, Lawrence, and Downe townships, and the Maurice River helped organize travel and trade. A horse-powered ferry connected Greenwich and Fairfield from the 1700s until 1838; later, wharves along the river handled commercial shipping. The land also carries Lenape and Nanticoke history, adding an older layer to the South Jersey landscape. Fairton's name carries that working geography, even as the community is now folded into the Vineland-Millville-Bridgeton region.

Local history turns up in the schoolhouse story. Fairfield's first school stood at the Burlington Road and Fairton-Millville Road crossroads, and a two-room Fairton School followed in 1869. Students today are served by Fairfield Township schools and Cumberland Regional High School, keeping education tied to the same township geography. The community sits among South Jersey farms, wetlands, and river roads, with Millville and Bridgeton supplying larger shopping, civic, and cultural centers. The local clue is the way Fairton grew from crossings: a road junction, a ferry route, and a school corner still show where the community sits.
