Falls City, NE

Falls City is the Richardson County seat in southeastern Nebraska, on the north side of the Big Nemaha River and close to the Missouri, Kansas, and Iowa lines. The 2020 census counted 4,133 residents. James Lane founded the town in 1857 during the free-state struggle over Kansas, and the first household belonged to abolitionists Dave and Anne Dorrington. The Atchison & Nebraska Railroad arrived in 1871, followed by the Missouri Pacific, turning the river town into a county business and distribution center. That county-seat role still shows in the Lydia Bruun Library, the 1938 Prichard Auditorium, the courthouse, hospital, and Falls City Public Schools. The Big Nemaha remains the geographic reference, while U.S. 73 and U.S. 159 point outward to the four-state corner.
