Fanshawe, OK

Tucked along U.S. Highway 270 in Le Flore County, Fanshawe is a quiet community of roughly 350 residents, situated about twenty miles southwest of Poteau. The town was founded in the late 19th century when the railroad pushed through southeastern Oklahoma. In a classic bit of frontier railway history, company executives touring the newly laid tracks reportedly drew station names out of a hat, selecting the name of a railroad worker from Philadelphia. It soon developed into a hardworking stop supported by local timber, coal mining, and small family farms.

Over the years, the area adapted as the landscape changed around it. The completion of nearby Wister Dam in 1949 reshaped local farmland, and the economy shifted toward cattle ranching, poultry, and timber. Today, Fanshawe retains a relaxed, spread-out atmosphere where the local school acts as a central gathering point. Set against the rolling hills near the Ouachita National Forest, it offers a peaceful rural lifestyle with direct highway access to larger shopping and job centers in Poteau and Wilburton.
