Fanwood, NJ

Fanwood grew up around its historic train station, and the tracks still shape the rhythm of the borough today. Named in the late 1800s after the daughter of a railroad executive, the town features a compact center split between North and South Avenues, with Martine Avenue connecting the two sides. It is easy to grab a coffee, pick up dinner, or run errands right near the depot. Commuters make daily use of the Raritan Valley Line, which offers a steady route into Newark along with connecting and direct trips into Midtown Manhattan.

The surrounding residential streets are quiet and tree-lined, filled with well-kept Victorians, Colonials, and mid-century homes. On the southwest side of town, Kramer Manor holds a meaningful place in New Jersey history as a neighborhood established in the 1920s to open doors to Black homeownership during an era of widespread housing discrimination. Fanwood also blends smoothly into neighboring Scotch Plains, a close connection reflected in their shared school district, youth sports leagues, and joint community programs.

Most daily routines center on the downtown district, where local eateries, small businesses, and the Fanwood Memorial Library sit within a short walk of the platform. Community traditions bring residents together throughout the year, highlighted by the annual Fanny Wood Day festival with its street vendors, live music, and family activities. The original 1874 Victorian station building still serves as a local history museum and gathering space, anchoring a friendly, tight-knit town where neighbors quickly get to know one another.
