Farrell, PA

Farrell is a western Mercer County city along the Shenango River, just north of Sharon in the Shenango Valley. The 2020 census counted 4,258 residents. The city appeared almost overnight after a steel mill went up in 1901 on what had been open land near the river. First called South Sharon, it took the name Farrell in 1912 for industrialist James A. Farrell and became a city in 1932. The old nickname, the Magic City, came from that sudden blast-furnace growth. Farrell's mill era lasted through the 20th century, with Sharon Steel's Roemer Works shaping jobs, neighborhoods, schools, and the street grid until the plant was liquidated in 1992.

The Shenango River and nearby Shenango River Lake keep water in the local picture, while Buhl Park, UPMC Horizon, and Interstate 80 connect the city to the wider valley. Farrell Area School District and the city's parks keep the local routine grounded. Farrell's local scoop is a Pennsylvania steel city that rose in a hurry, kept its own identity after the mill, and still carries the Magic City nickname.
