Festus, MO

Festus and neighboring Crystal City make up Missouri’s "Twin Cities," blending together so seamlessly that you often cross the border without realizing it. Crystal City started out as a plate-glass company town, which led early settlers to build their own homes, shops, and saloons just outside its limits in what became Festus. Before settling on its current name (legend says locals randomly flipped open a Bible to pick it), the area went by colorful nicknames like Tanglefoot and Limitville. Today, both towns have distinct downtowns and separate city halls, but they share a tight-knit community feel and daily rhythms.

Day-to-day life is split between charming local spots and convenient modern retail. Historic Main Street serves as the town's social heart, lined with locally owned coffee shops, bakeries, a craft brewery, and mom-and-pop boutiques. If you need everyday essentials, the commercial strip along Highway 61 and Interstate 55 handles the big-box shopping, grocery runs, and casual dining. Mercy Hospital Jefferson sits right along the highway corridor, giving residents quick access to full-scale medical care. Commuters also appreciate the direct shot up I-55, which puts downtown St. Louis about 35 to 40 minutes away.

When it comes to getting outdoors, Festus offers plenty of room to stretch your legs. Larry G. Crites Memorial Park is the main hub, spanning over 100 acres with a fishing lake, paved walking trails, sports fields, and pavilions along Joachim Creek. It regularly hosts community gatherings, outdoor movie nights, and seasonal celebrations. The town's biggest event is Twin City Days each September, a weekend-long festival shared with Crystal City that brings out live music, craft vendors, and neighborhood competitions. Between downtown car shows, concerts in Sunset Park, and holiday events, there is always something going on.
