Oakville’s most distinctive public landscape follows the Mississippi River bluffs through Cliff Cave Park. Its karst terrain contains the cave that gives the park its name, while the Mississippi Greenway makes the floodplain and bluff accessible on foot or bicycle. A 6.7-mile paved loop circles bottomland beside the river, and a shaded 2.04-mile extension climbs to an overlook and Telegraph Road. Two unpaved routes add a one-mile river-bluff walk and a three-mile, moderately hilly path through Spring Valley; the park also supports mountain biking, equestrian use, fishing, picnics, and seasonal birdwatching. Oakville itself is an unincorporated part of southern St. Louis County between Interstate 55 and the Mississippi. The 15.88-square-mile census place had 36,301 residents in 2020, so county agencies rather than a city hall provide its police, planning, library, and park services.

Telegraph Road connects the greenway’s upper entrance with Cliff Cave Branch Library. The branch has public computers, Wi-Fi, meeting and study rooms, a computer-training lab, and a community garden; a 2016 renovation added a larger children’s area and a broad south-facing window. Farther south, Bee Tree Park preserves the former Eugene Nims estate. Its 1929 Maritz & Young house and formal gardens overlook the river, while a nine-acre lake supports bank fishing. Near Oakville’s western edge, St. Louis Community College’s South County location adds transfer courses, health and technical prerequisites, an emergency-medical-technician program, tutoring, and a MetroBus stop at Lemay Ferry and Meramec Bottom roads. These facilities make the community’s geography legible: Telegraph and Lemay Ferry roads carry indoor services, while the eastern bluff line supplies the larger shared outdoor spaces.
