Finzel, MD

Finzel is a Garrett County census-designated place on Maryland Route 546 near the Pennsylvania border and the I-68/US 40 connection. The road follows the ridge of Little Savage Mountain through scattered houses and farmland before crossing the state line, so Finzel's orientation is as much north-south highway as town center. Garrett County is high, rural, and shaped by a mix of farming, timber, coal, and long-distance roads.

There's more mining history here than the small map suggests. Maryland records list Patrick Finzel as the local postmaster in 1899, and the Union Mining Company's Fire Clay Mine operated in the area by the early twentieth century. A 1929 Maryland mining report even records Finzel's first-aid team competing at a national mine-rescue contest. Today the CDP is mostly a scattered mountain community, with old farms, coal-country history, and MD 546 connecting it to Frostburg, the National Pike, and Pennsylvania. The ridge is also a useful reminder that state lines do not erase old county connections.
