Fitchburg, MA

The Nashua River links Fitchburg’s industrial past to its present geography. Paper mills lined the river during the early twentieth century, and the 1928 Central Steam Plant supplied steam and electricity to local factories. The city’s history reaches farther back: the area was part of Lunenburg before Fitchburg incorporated in 1764, on land previously occupied by the Nipmuc. In 2020, the northern Worcester County city had 41,946 residents. Fitchburg State University places a public higher-education campus within the city and contributes concerts, films, lectures, theater, and gallery exhibitions that are open to the surrounding region. Outdoor and cultural institutions are distributed from wooded parks to downtown. Coggshall Park covers more than 250 acres around Mirror Lake, with wooded trails, a walking path, playground, disc-golf course, gazebo, and stone house.

The city publishes guides for Coggshall and a wider trail system that includes Coolidge, Crocker, Flat Rock, Rollstone, Streamline, and watershed routes. Founded in 1925, the Fitchburg Art Museum holds more than 7,000 works spanning ancient Egypt through contemporary art, with particular strengths in American art, African art, and photography; exhibitions and programs draw on both that collection and contemporary New England artists. The public library is also in a period of visible change. As of July 2026 it was operating from a temporary Boulder Drive location while its Main Street building underwent renovation and expansion, while continuing computer access, digital collections, and programs for children, teens, and adults.
