About Flat Rock

Flat Rock is a census-designated place in Surry County, in the Mount Airy area of northwestern North Carolina. The 2020 census counted 1,326 residents. The CDP covers about 2.6 square miles at roughly 1,148 feet above sea level, with farms, homes, and roads gathered around the granite country of Surry County. Its name comes from the community’s quarry landscape, a clue that the rock beneath the place has always mattered.

Granite has been quarried here continuously since 1889 by the North Carolina Granite Corporation. That long work history gives Flat Rock a different feel from the better-known Flat Rock village in Henderson County: this is a compact Surry County settlement tied to stone, labor, and the Mount Airy countryside. The small boundary holds a clear relationship between the quarry, local roads, and nearby farms. Quarry roads and nearby farms still meet at the CDP’s edges. Flat Rock is a place where a simple geographic name points directly to the material that built its economic story.
