About Flint Hill

Flint Hill is one of St. Charles County’s oldest communities, founded in 1836 by Captain Taliaferro P. Grantham. Grantham and other settlers came from Virginia and named it for Flint Hill in Rappahannock County; the new settlement stood where Mexico Road and Salt River Road met. The post office opened that same year, and tobacco soon became the crop that shaped the local economy. By the 1850s Flint Hill had stores, a hotel, a saloon, a tobacco factory, a blacksmith, and a stagecoach route. Flint Hill is a Missouri crossroads with a Virginia name and a tobacco history.
