Florence's downtown preserves substantial Arizona territorial history. Founded on the Gila River in 1866, the Pinal County seat retains a nationally recognized townsite district; the town's 2022 general plan counted 123 National Register properties, 25 listed individually and 98 through the district's multiple-resource designation. McFarland State Historic Park occupies the 1878 territorial courthouse, whose pitched wood roof sits over traditional adobe walls made from local soil. Florence also developed a substantial government and corrections economy. A 2025 town financial document lists Pinal County, the State of Arizona, private detention operators, federal agencies, schools, and municipal government among the largest employers. The 2020 census counted 26,785 people, and the July 2025 estimate was 25,222.

Current civic life is not confined to the historic buildings. The 28,000-square-foot Viney Jones Library and Community Center combines adult and children's collections, a story-time area, teen room, makerspace, public computers, five multipurpose rooms, and arts-and-crafts and meeting space. Jason Lopez Memorial Park supplies ball fields, basketball and volleyball courts, a playground, skate park, and picnic facilities; Padilla Park adds a splash pad and amphitheater. The municipal aquatic center has competition and play pools, water slides, diving boards, and a multipurpose room. History remains an active public program as well: the town's preservation office maintains an audio tour and walking-tour materials and organizes recurring walking and historic-home tours.
