About Florence

Florence is a census-designated place in Ravalli County where the Bitterroot Valley narrows between the Sapphire and Bitterroot Mountains. The Bitterroot River runs along the east side, and County Line Road marks the northern edge of the place near Missoula County. The 2020 census counted 821 residents. Florence took its name from Florence Abbott Hammond, wife of lumberman A. Hammond, but the valley's agricultural history also shows up in the irrigation works and apple orchards that developed around the community. These days the river is the main physical reference point, with fly-fishing water, ranch land, and Highway 93 tying Florence to Stevensville, Hamilton, and Missoula.

Florence-Carlton K–12 Schools gives the community a shared institution across the rural valley, while the Bitterroot Valley's early apple industry remains part of its local backstory. Those early orchards made Florence part of a broader fruit-growing experiment in western Montana. Florence is small and still connected by the mountain valley's river, school district, and north-south road.
