Florida, NY

Florida is an Orange County village in southeastern New York, tucked into the Black Dirt Region and set within the town of Warwick, with small northern portions reaching Goshen. Main Street, village offices, nearby Glenmere Lake, and the dark muck fields around the village give the place its local shape. The farming landscape is not background scenery here; onions and other crops grew out of the area's unusually rich soil.

The village was settled in the early 1700s and developed as a farm community. Its local history includes Elijah Churchill, who received the first Purple Heart in 1783, and William Henry Seward, the New York governor and U.S. secretary of state associated with the village. Jimmy Sturr adds a modern musical thread through his polka career. Today Florida balances village services, agricultural roads, community celebrations, and the wider Hudson Valley connections of Orange County. It is a small place with a very particular soil story. The annual onion harvest still gives the surrounding fields a seasonal pulse.
