Flushing, OH

Flushing is a Belmont County village with 830 residents in the 2020 census. It was platted in 1813 and incorporated in 1849, and its center still gathers around East High Street. Two institutions give that street unusual weight: the Underground Railroad Museum–Ohio Valley and the Victoria Read Public Library, a Belmont County District Library branch. The museum’s location puts national history inside the village’s everyday civic setting, while the library provides the reading room and local-service side of the same small corridor.

The museum was founded in 1993 by Dr. John Mattox and Rosalind Mattox to preserve and share the Ohio Valley’s Underground Railroad history. The surrounding region had Quaker settlers who were active abolitionists, and the museum keeps that nineteenth-century story connected to a specific Ohio Valley place. Flushing’s present map is easy to picture: a small Belmont village, an old platted center, a museum focused on freedom-seeking history, and a library on the same high street. Its strongest local detail is the way those civic and historical institutions sit together.
