Forest City, PA

Forest City is a Susquehanna County borough at the corner of three counties: Susquehanna, Lackawanna, and Wayne. The place was known as Forest Mills in the 1850s, then carried the post-office name Pentecost from 1879 to 1886 before becoming Forest City. The railroad arrived through the Jefferson Branch, and coal mining followed an 1871 discovery. By the early twentieth century, timber, coal, lumber, and silk were all part of the town’s industrial mix. The Forest City Area Historical Society now keeps that coal-town story close, while Forest City Regional School District serves the borough. It’s a four-avenue town with a surprisingly deep industrial past.
