Forsyth, MT

Forsyth is the Rosebud County seat on the south bank of the Yellowstone River in eastern Montana. The 2020 census counted 1,647 residents. It began in 1876 as the first settlement on the Yellowstone, first serving steamboats and Army operations, then took a more permanent shape when the Northern Pacific Railway arrived. The town was named in 1882 for General James William Forsyth, giving a river landing a military surname and a railroad future. Forsyth's map still reads as a transportation story.

The river provided the original highway, rail made the town a shipping and county-government center, and Interstate 94 now runs past the same valley. The city calls itself the City of Trees, a fitting contrast to the wide, open Rosebud landscape, and the county fair keeps the civic calendar tied to ranching and agriculture. Forsyth's local scoop is a Montana county seat that grew from steamboats to rail to interstate traffic without losing the Yellowstone River at its center.
