Fort Covington, NY

Fort Covington is a Franklin County town and border community along the Salmon River, with Canada directly to the north. The area was settled in the 1790s by people from southern Canada and Vermont who came to work the river mills. It was first called French Mills, while the present name comes from a War of 1812 fortification associated with General Leonard Covington. The town’s northern edge is also the international boundary, giving an old mill landscape a distinctly cross-border daily map.

The Little Salmon River and Pike Creek shape the center of the community, and Rainbow Park provides a small gathering place downtown. Fishing and paddling remain part of the local routine, while the Salmon River Central School District serves students from the area, including the St. Regis Mohawk community. The Fort Covington border inspection station, built in the 1930s, belongs to the same roadside history as the old mills and the crossing into Quebec. Fort Covington is a rural New York town where river power, farmland, War of 1812 memory, and the Canadian border all meet within a short drive.
