Fort Garland, CO

Fort Garland sits at the eastern entrance to the wide, high-desert San Luis Valley, right as you come down off scenic La Veta Pass. Framed by the towering peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, this small community of under 500 residents offers big mountain views and an unhurried, rural pace. It also serves as a convenient crossroads, connecting drivers south toward New Mexico or west toward the amenities in Alamosa.

The town grew around an 1850s frontier outpost, and that heritage is still visible today at the Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center. The museum preserves original adobe buildings and shares the layered history of the area, from the native Ute people to the Buffalo Soldiers stationed here. Daily life is quiet and close to nature, punctuated by local get-togethers like the annual Fort Garland Band Jam.
