About Fort Payne

Fort Payne is the county seat of DeKalb County in northeast Alabama, near Lookout Mountain and Little River Canyon National Preserve. The city's name comes from an 1830s fort used during the forced removal of the Cherokee on the Trail of Tears, giving the place a heavy historical foundation. Fort Payne is also long associated with hosiery manufacturing, but its setting near mountain scenery and the National Park Service presence gives it more than an industrial story.
